Farthest Reaches is pleased to offer artifacts for sale
from the personal collection of Astronaut and
Aquanaut Scott Carpenter. As one of the original
Mercury 7 astronauts, Cmdr. Carpenter flew the second
orbital Mercury flight in 1963 on Aurora 7. After
leaving NASA, Scott continued on the Sealab project with
the Navy, making him the first astronaut to
explore both outer and inner space. We were sad to lose
Scott in 2013. Scott accumulated a number of space
related mementos spanning those Navy and NASA years.
His family has authorized Farthest Reaches to offer his
one of a kind memorabilia to collectors worldwide..

This is one
of the holy grail of badges, a Mercury
Astronaut's NASA photo ID. This is the
actual badge issued to and worn extensively
by Astronaut Scott Carpenter. It IS
NOT in 'mint" condition, nor would you
expect it to be given it's being used and
over 50 years old. The information on the
badge speaks for itself and I have provided
large scans to assist you in your review.
This badge appears to go back to May 1964
though I'm not able to say with certainity
exactly when it was issued to Scott
Carpenter. It is however hand signed by
Scott using his vintage official signature.
A rare piece of Astronaut issued and worn
daily, NASA history.

This T-Shirt
owned by Patty Carpenter has never been
worn. John Glenn has hand signed in
black sharpie, "To Patty, with best regards
- John Glenn....5/1/04". I'm quite
certain there are very few if any, signed
T-Shirts like this one and as you must
surely know, Scott and John Glenn were the
best of friends. This shirt is as "space
related" as it gets, honoring John Glenn's
two flights (Mercury/Shuttle). It's a size
large and made of 100% cotton.

way). Has grommets for hanging on one
side as you can see in the photo. Made
of very heavy material, (nylon I suspect)

was used for one or more special events

This is a
report of the Capsule Coordination Group
Meeting of August 14th 1959. This
group meet weekly at Langley Field, VA.
It discusses the progress since their last
meeting and current agenda items that need
to be carried forward. This is a 6
page document and this copy comes from Scott
Carpenter's personal files. He has
hand initialed the first page on the top
right corner with his letter, "C". The
content of this document is fascinating and
covers a number critical items pertinent to
the development of the capsule itself,
launch facilities and various aspects of
testing as Project Mercury developed. A
rarely seen look at what went on behind the
scenes that lead to the great success of the
Project Mercury program from the Scott

blue loose-leaf manual was issued for
Capsule 7 (Friendship 7) by McDonnell

are 'Normal Procedures', 'Emergency
Procedures' and 'Trouble Shooting'. In
excellent condition. Scott has hand signed
his name on the title page. It should
be noted that Scott was the back-up pilot
for this mission that was flown by Astronaut
John Glenn. This a rare find by anyone's
standards but a copy actually utilized by
the back-up astronaut for that mission puts
this into a category unto itself.

Internal Memorandum Detailing
Contingency Recovery Areas for MA-6 (Friendship 7)
Scott Carpenter's Personal Copy - Dated January 12, 1961
|
|
The two 8.5"
x 11" pages shown here are an origional
vintage memo dated January 12, 1961 from
Carl R. Huss, Retrofire Controller to Chris
Craft. As you can read it concerns the
Location of the contingency recovery areas
for MA-6 flight of John Glenn for which
Scott Carpenter was the back up pilot.
This memorandum covered the contingency
recovery locations should they become needed
during orbits 4 - 18.
This is Scott
Carpenter's personal copy and he has
initialed on the top right with his typical
"C" as you can see in the scan. Again, I can
over over state how rare these internal
vintage Mercury documents are. In
wonderful condition.

Memorandum "Scolding" the Mercury 7 from Dr. Bob
Voas
Re: the lack of time spent in Mercury trainers -
March 27, 1961
|
|
This very
vintage memorandum written to the Mercury
Astronauts by Dr. Robert Voas, Training
Officer on March 27, 1961. Voas
expresses his grave concern over the
astronauts not putting in enough hours
working inside the Mercury Trainers. His
concerns extend to several levels and rather
than not doing the content of this amazing
memorandum justice, have scanned it so that
you can see for yourself. I can’t say enough
about this document. I’ve never seen
anything like it before. Perhaps the Mercury
7’s schedules were spreading them so thin
that there were not enough hours in the day
to spend adequate time in the trainers. Dr.
Voas even offers his services to get
involved in any way possible to take
measures that would free up the astronauts
so that they would have more time for
training activity. It is hand signed by Dr.
Voas himself.
Not priced
for the squeamish but this is unquestionably
one of the most interesting and unique hand
signed early Mercury era memorandums you are
ever likely to come across.

Memorandum: Engineering Debriefing Plan for MA-7 - May
2, 1962
This very vintage memorandum written by
Harold Johnson, Head, MA-7 Debriefing Team
dated May 2, 1962 describes in full detail
all aspects of the engineering debriefing of
Scott Carpenter after what they hoped would
be the successful conclusion of his Aurora 7
Flight. To that end, it is broken down into
four components: A. Shipboard
self-debriefing of the Astronaut, B. Flight
operations debriefing, C. General flight
activities and information debriefing and D.
Specific scientific experiment and detailed
observation debriefing.
The balance of this 24 page document details
every question exactly as they would be
asked by the engineers in each of the above
areas in order to fully and accurately
debrief Astronaut Carpenter.
My guess is that an original vintage
document such as this has seldom if ever
surfaced for sale to the general public. It
offers a great look into the many aspects of
a Mercury mission that project engineers
would need to assess in order to determine
the mission's effectiveness and for
application to benefit those flights that
would follow. It’s a fascinating inside look
at the flight of MA-7 from an engineer’s
perspective.

FLOWN Liberty Bell 7 Washer
Lucite Presentation
produced by the Kansas
Cosmosphere, 1999
(from the personal
collection of Scott
Carpenter)
Mercury-Redstone 4 (Liberty
Bell 7) Flown Component from
the Recovered Spacecraft in
Lucite Display. A handsome
display of 5.25" x 4.25" x
1.75" containing a washer
removed from the capsule
along with a photo and
explanatory text. Gus
Grissom was the pilot of
this sub-orbital mission,
America's second-ever
spaceflight, and barely
escaped from the capsule as
it floated in the Atlantic
Ocean after a hatch exploded
prematurely. He was rescued,
but Liberty Bell 7 sank into
the ocean. Near the
thirty-eighth anniversary of
the flight, a recovery team
financed by the Discovery
Channel pulled the capsule
off the floor of the
Atlantic; it was taken to
the Kansas Cosmosphere and
Space Center in Hutchinson,
Kansas for a painstaking
restoration. This particular
washer was not reinstalled
because of the corroded
condition of the component
to which it was originally
attached. These souvenir
displays were sold to raise
money toward the restoration
and exhibition costs and
includes a printed
Certificate of Authenticity
from the Cosmosphere and its
original box.

signed by Glenn, Carpenter, Schirra and Cooper

medallion was issued by the Astronaut

It contains medal from Mercury Atlas
launch pad 14 from where John Glenn,
Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra and Gordon
Cooper were launched.
All
four of these astronauts have boldly hand
signed the sleeve this medallion is
contained within. This was NOT a part
of some limited edition but rather a result
of the astronauts signing a few each for
each other as far as I can ascertain.
This comes in a plastic 'snap" case which is
not shown in the interest of getting a
decent scan of the signatures. This
unique memento comes from Scott Carpenter's
personal collection.

This
magnificant award was presented to Scott
Carpenter as honoree at the Science Museum
of Long Island Gala on May 5, 2000.
I've seen some impressive awards in my work
with the many astronauts represented on this

this one. It stands 15.5" high with a
base measuring 8" in diameter.
The
plaque reads:

Scott
Carpenter's 1943 Boulder High School
Senior Notebook
from the
Carpenter Family Collection
This is almost too cool to be true.
Farthest Reaches is offering Scott
Carpenter's Boulder, CO High School
senior year 3 ring binder. The
cover of this binder is LOADED with
writing as you'd typically expect to see
on a teenagers school notebook.
This teenager however would become one
of America's great heros for his
exploits as a pioneer Astronaut as well
as a Naval Diver.
As you can see on the first image, Scott
has himself written his name on the
front of this admittedly well worn
binder. No doubt as a highschool
teenager this was used and abused but
what stories it could tell if it could
talk! It's amazing it has even
survived over all of these years.
One name on this notebook has 5/21/43
under it. You can see that name
and date on the second image.
Using that as a basis, Scott would have
been 18 years old. The fact that
Scott held on to this for all these
years tells you what great sentimental
value it must have held for him.
Folks, you could look for years and
never come across this sort of item with
such an imtimate, personal
association to a yet to be pioneer
Mercury Astronaut. It's not for
everyone and it's not inexpensive but
for the right person who loves and
appreciates the esoteric value and
absolute uniqueness of this 73 year old
treasure (like myself), it would be an
amazing addition to your collection not
to mention a wonderful conversation
piece.
Comes with a COA from Farthest Reaches
LLC.

Challenge Coins
from the personal collection of Astronaut Scott
Carpenter
|
What IS a
Challenge Coin ? A Challenge Coin
is a small coin or medallion (usually
military), bearing an organization’s
insignia or emblem and carried by the
organization’s members. Traditionally,
they are given to prove membership when
challenged and to enhance morale. In
addition, they are also collected by
service members. In practice, challenge
coins are normally presented by unit
commanders in recognition of special
achievement by a member of the unit.
They are also exchanged in recognition
of visits to an organization.
These
four Challenge Coins were presented to
Scott Carpenter throughout his travels.
He kept them in his personal collection
until being offered here through
Farthest Reaches. They are from:
the 21st Secretary of the US Air Force,
Florida Highway Patrol, Veterans of
Foreign Wars, and 349th Air Mobility
Wing, Travis Air Force Base, CA.
Challenge
Coins are highly collectable and those
coming from the personal collection of
an original Mercury Astronaut are even
more desirable.
