Space Shuttle
Since 1981, NASA
space shuttles have been rocketing from the Florida coast
into Earth orbit. The five orbiters — Columbia, Challenger,
Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour — have flown more than 130
times, carrying over 350 people into space and travelling
more than half a billion miles, more than enough to reach
Jupiter.
Designed to return to Earth and land
like a giant glider, the shuttle was the world's first
reusable space vehicle. More than all of that, though, the
shuttle program expanded the limits of human achievement and
broadened our understanding of our world.

Neil's own words, ".....as a crew document

during traiining. It was not used during
the actual flight but WAS
KEPT on the console"
You will hear throughout (though does
warrant mentioning) that
MCC Console materials from an historic
missiion such as STS-1 are highly desirable
and particularly when they come from the
Launch Flight Director himself.
This ascent checklist is close to 1" thick
and contains 22 tabbed sections as issued.
Neil Hutcinson has marked the cover in his
own hand with "Hutchinson" and as you can
see in the cover scan and has also indicated the revisions
included. There are a number of hand

This abort checklist (AOA EDW) is best

around is a rare event and therefore this
checklist was not referenced often. It was not
used during the flight but WAS

As defined, abort once around (AOA) was
available if the shuttle was unable to reach
a stable orbit but had sufficient velocity
to circle the Earth once and land.
That re-entry in the case of this checklist
would have occured at Edwards Air Froce Base
(EDW)
