Farthest Reaches is both honored and appreciative for the opportunity to have known Wally Schirra both personally and professionally over the years.  He was everything you've every read or heard about him....and more.  Wally is and always will be missed by everyone who ever came to know him and for those of you who did have that pleasure, I'm sure you would all agree.

We are very pleased that we continue our close relationship with Wally's family and that end are offering quite a number of items this pioneer astronaut's personal archives.  Keep checking back as this page will update periodically.  Keep in mind that these are for the most part, unique one of a kind items, so don't delay if interested because when they are gone....they're gone!  Happy browsing or as Wally would have said, "Happy Landings"

Home State Flag of New Jersey - Flown Onboard Apollo 7

Apollo 7 FLOWN Flag

This 6"x4" flag was flown onboard Apollo 7 by that mission's CDR, Walter M. Schirra. Schirra has inscribed the flag accordingly, "Flown on Apollo 7, Wally Schirra".  In addition, it is accompanied by the letter of authenticity you see shown here which is ALSO hand signed by Wally Schirra.  PLEASE NOTE:  The flag as shown IS NOT attached to the letter and can easily be displayed as seen or seperate should you so choose.

As he says in the letter, "I was born and attended school in New Jersey.  I felt is was appropriate to carry the flag of my home state on my final space flight."

New Jersey was near and dear to Wally's heart and this is just another example of that connection giving this artifact an even greater appeal.  Directly from a 3 time astronaut's personal collection with ironclad provenance and in pristine, never before displayed conditon.

Wally Schirra Aviation Hall of Fame Medal

On July 14, 1964 the National Aviation Hall of Fame was chartered nationally by an act of the U.S. 88th Congress, public law 88-372 signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The organization continues today as a public foundation reporting annually to Congress. The primary support for this foundation comes from private, tax-deductible membership dues and contributions from individuals and organizations.

Its mission is to honor aerospace legends to inspire future leaders by realizing the tenacity, vision, persistence, skill and courage of the men and women of the air & space industry.

Principal activities since 1962 are the annual gala induction ceremonies for over 200 (4-5 per year) people selected for enshrinement. The selection process for induction into the National Aviation Hall of Fame involves a rigorous review and final selection process by a prestigious and knowledgeable group of aviation and space experts from around the country. The enshrinement ceremony is often referred to as “The Oscar Night of Aviation".

Offered here is the NAHOF Medal with plaque presented to Astronaut Wally Schirra on July 20, 1986 on the occasion of his induction into the ranks of this prestigious organization.

A Wally Schirra "Gotcha" : "Pete Conrad, not so famous astronaut"

from the Schirra Family Collection

This is one of most iconic Wally Schirra items I've offered for sale.  It's not flown and it's not a NASA document but rather......it's one of Wally's origional infamous but lesser known "GOTCHA'S !".  This one was played on Pete Conrad.

As you can see in the scan, Wally used his creative skills to heavily "doctor' this July 1984 issue of Reader's Digest.  A few pictures truly speak a thousand words so take a very close look at the  the images above.

The fictious address label is affixed to the fully intact mailing sleeve for this magazine and the Business Reply Card is attached to the inside opposite the Miracle Ear promotion as if it was published that way.  This is truly the essence of Astronaut Wally Schirra, the "King of Gotcha's".

This gem of an item comes directly from the Schirra Family Collection and a COA will be provided to the buyer that attests to it's origion and ownership.  It's rare that a authentic vintage Schirra Gotcha would EVER become available for sale.  You read about them and you hear stories about them and now you may add one to your personal collection.

Elton John was known for his flamboyant eyewear, Gene Kranz had his trademark vests and Wally Schirra will always be associated with his iconic Hawaiian shirts.

During his NASA days it was Ban-Lon but for years after, Astronaut Wally Schirra loved and lived in his Hawaiian shirts. The Schirra's owned a vacation home in Kauai and spent time there whenever they were able, so it's no wonder he felt so comfortable in these shirts. Any of you fortunate enough to have had the pleasure of meeting Wally publicly over the years can attest to this.

In fact, following Wally's passing in 2007 at the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation's yearly event, Scott Carpenter honored his fallen brother (along with several celebrity guests and attendees) by wearing their Hawaiian shirts to the traditionally more formal Saturday evening banquet.

Offered here is the actual shirt owned worn by Wally as shown in the image (modeled by Author Francis French).  This one has had gold naval aviator wings embroidered onto the right breast.  This was Wally's way of personalizing this particular shirt. Most unusual even for Wally. It is an American Design Studios shirt, size Large, 100% cotton. Comes with a COA from Farthest Reaches LLC.

FYI: Unfortunately I do not have specific photos of Wally wearing these shirts but there are many on the web and with some luck you may be able to find one. Incidently, one of Wally's shirts sold recently at auction for $773 with buyers premium  I'm just sayin......

Apollo 11 Man on the Moon Bar Glasses
from the Schirra Family Collection

This vintage late 1960s set of two bar glasses come from what was the personal bar of Astronaut Wally Schirra.  He enjoyed these more unusual sorts of things and I'd see these glasses regularly on the Schirra bar when visiting his Rancho Santa Fe home.

They are quite heavy in weight and are unusual in that they can be used one way as a rock glass or if inverted, as a shot glass.  As you can see, they are emblazoned with art associated with the Apollo 11 mission.

These glasses are NOT totally unique and can be found on Ebay from time to time but these two have the rare distinction of belonging to and being used by a three time pioneer astronaut for years in his own home.  They come with a COA from Farthest Reaches LLC.

Presdented to Mercury Astronaut Wally Schirra

by Captain E.P. Rankin, USN

U.S.S. Kearsarge CVS-33
October 10, 1962

This historic certifate was presented to Astronaut Wally Schirra on 10/3/62 by the U.S.S. Kearsarge Captian following Schirra's MA-8 flight.  It is hand signed by Captain Rankin in ballpoint pen along with the wallet sized card that was also given.  It makes Schirra an honorary crew member.  Though the tone of the card may be someone light, the reason for it being awarded was anything but.  Schirra's MA-8 flight was textbook perfect and it's completion moved the United States one step closer to our ultimate goal....the MOON.

This award was proudly maintained in the Schirra family space collection from the time it was presented until being offered to Farthest Reaches for its sale fjust a short time ago.  It is produced on heavy card stock and is in excellent condition.  It measures 10" x 8"..

Letter (dated March 22, 1997) is closely associated with the HBO Mini Series, "From The Earth To The Moon".  Wally Schirra was portrayed by actor Mark Harmon in that production.  Wally enjoyed that film and was quite happy that Mark portrayed him, even joking about Mark's great looks (in typical Wally style) as it was only befitting such an actor would be hired to "play" him.

A close friendship between the actor and the astronaut sprung from this film and is reflected in this very personal hand written letter from Harmon. Harmon speaks about wanting to, "do it right" with regard to the effort that went into the accuracy of the film and for his depiction of Wally, states his intention "to do justice to you the man".  There's even a joke about the Banlon shirts that Wally was well known for wearing.  Harmon goes on to say, "...what a treat this role was for me".  This letter also includes a production photo of Harmon and Krista Adair as Wally and Jo Schirra from the film set.

This is a wonderful letter with exceptional personal content, hand written on Harmon's own production company's stationary (Wings Productions).

Wally Schirra CBS Memo

Wally Schirra CBS News

This original CBS Memorandum from Executive Robert Wussler dated July 1, 1969 details their complete personnel list for television coverage of the Apollo 11 Launch Day Phase" and "Lunar Day Phase".

Coverage at a variety of locations is covered in this document, including KSC, Houston, New York, Bethpage, Coco Beach, Downey, Flagstaff, Kennedy Airport, Smithsonian Institution, Disneyland and even the astronauts homes.  CBS Radio News personnel assignments are also detailed.

This facinating internal document is 12 pages long in total.  Six pages for the "Launch Day Phase" and six pages for the Lunar Day Phase".  This comes from the personal collection of Astronaut Wally Schirra who was a "Special Consultant" for CBS Broadcasting for this historic event.

Comes with a COA from Farthest Reaches LLC.  I seriously doubt that you'll find another one like it that has survived the years.

Wally Schirra Wickie Mouse Club Membership

This most interesting offering is Wally Schirra's membership card to the Wickie Mouse Club dated December, 15th, 1959 just seven months after being selected as a Mercury Astronaut.

Wickie Stivers who has hand signed this card was a young female reporter, in the  Cape Canaveral area, who found herself among the small press corps covering the attempted Vanguard satellite launch in December 1957.  Stivers’ was popular as a local radio broadcaster and had connections to the Cape military base.

She gained the nickname of "Wickie Mouse" as a namesake for the mouse (also called Wickie Mouse) launched into space as an Air Force test subject in 1958 to test the effects of space flight on mammals.

The event proved helpful for Stivers, whose newfound fame landed her magazine interviews and spots on popular television programs such as What’s My Line. Yet as the story goes, this young journalist eventually ended up as a stewardess.  This wallet sized card was presented to Wally by WKKO and Reuters News Service.  A very interesting association item with a great backstory.

Schirra Space Escape Club Card

This most interesting offering is Wally Schirra's ver vintage and is Wally's membership card for the Project Mercury Mock-Up Space Escape Club.  Though it carries a hand signature from it's presenter, it does not have a date.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that it was issued following Schirra's Project Mercury egress training.  Folks, personal mementos such as this just don't see the light of day.  Were it not for my representing the families of W. Schirra, G. Cooper and S. Carpenter for thet sale of their memorabilia, items like this would NEVER be made available to collectors.

This card as well as others on this page are directly connectly to the very early days of the Project Mercury Program and as such are most worthy considerations for adding to anyone's space memorabilia collection.  Once these are gone, they're gone.  Most such as this are likely to be "one of" items as it's unlikely the others have survived the years.

"ALL ENGINES AHEAD, FULL !!"

October 11, 1968

This professionally framed image of the Apollo 7 Saturn V sitting on the pad was presented to Astronaut Wally Schirra and hand signed by well wishers who worked long hours behind the scenes to ensure the success of this first flight of a manned Apollo mission. There are approximately 63 signatures' spaced nicely around the mat with a central theme of, "All Engines Ahead, Full !!"  One entry is dated 10/11/68, indicating this might have been given to Wally just before Apollo 7's actual lift-off on that day.

This framed item must have meant much to Commander Schirra who gave it a place of honor on the wall of his San Diego home for many years to follow.  The outside dimensions are a substantial 21" x 24.75"  The mat with signatures measures 16" x 20".

This plaque was issued to Wally Schirra and reads:

"Paratus Ferrire"

It is a hand painted emblem.  My research indicates that these words were used as a part of the U.S. Army's 411th Regiment's Unit Crest though the design doesn't match the design of the images of the crest I was able to find. This plaque was displayed on the wall of Captain Schirra's den for many years until being offered for sale through Farthest Reaches by the Schirra Family.

A very nice item from Wally personal files forwarded to him by a friend and well known Astronaut.
